It’s no secret that sometimes we just don’t want to do anything. You might be feeling unmotivated, uninspired, or even bored – and it seems like nothing will change your mind.
When you’re stuck in this state of apathy for a prolonged period of time, the natural inclination is to feel sorry for yourself and stop trying because life feels too hard.
However, there are ways to get out of this rut!
In the following blog post, we will give you 21 tips on how to combat a lack of motivation and start living again!
1. Identify the root cause of your lack of motivation
Lack of motivation can stem from many different causes, including depression, low self-esteem, lack of effort, or just the feeling that there is nothing worth doing.
It’s important to first figure out why you’re unmotivated before trying any of the tips on this list.
For example, if you are depressed and unmotivated due to a chemical imbalance in your brain, then anti-depressants may be the most effective way to get motivated again!
On the other hand, if you are feeling unmotivated because you don’t feel like you have control over your life, then it might be time to reassess what is important in your personal and professional lives.
2. Find a way to get excited about the future
Think about what you like and how it can help your life in the future. It might be something that excites you and you want to happen. Then take steps today to make it happen.
So, if you know that your dream job is to be a professional dancer, take some dance classes today. Or if you want to travel the world one day, start planning out how much money you’ll need and where exactly in the world you want to go!
The whole point is to find something that excites you and makes your heart beat faster. It should be enough to get yourself motivated to take the first step today.
3. Change your environment and start surrounding yourself with inspiring people
Someone with a lack of motivation may need to change their environment and start surrounding themselves with inspiring people.
If you’re surrounded by negative people who are constantly feeling sorry for themselves and taking it out on everyone around them, you’re not going to find motivation.
It will be difficult to get motivated if you’re spending your time with negative people who are constantly complaining, looking for the worst in every situation, and taking no action whatsoever.
Instead of surrounding yourself with these types of people, choose friends who are positive and optimistic about life — always look at the bright side of things!
Surround yourself with friends and family who inspire, rather than de-motivate, you.
Working in a positive environment is crucial if you’re looking for motivation! If someone has an unpleasant work environment or they don’t feel appreciated at their job, it’s going to be difficult for them to get motivated.
By working in an environment that’s inviting, motivating, and inspiring, you’ll have no trouble finding motivation and pursuing your goals!
4. Get some exercise
You may not always feel motivated to exercise, but it’s an incredibly effective way to get motivated when you’re feeling down.
Exercise works on the brain in a similar way that antidepressants work. So if you’ve tried everything else and nothing is working for you, try exercising!
It may be just what your body needs to start feeling better about itself again.
For example, even if someone doesn’t feel like running today – they’ll find themselves enjoying it after 20 minutes or so have passed by.
The same goes for any workout routine.
Once someone gets into the swing of things at the gym they usually don’t want to stop until their muscles are burning!
5. Find something that you enjoy doing
If you lack motivation, then you probably aren’t doing anything that makes your heart beat faster.
So, take a moment to think about what it is that you love and find out where those passions can fit into your life today!
It might be something as simple as taking a painting class or going on a hike through the rainforest.
But both of these activities will make you feel more alive than ever before! You’ll notice an increase in motivation almost immediately after finding new hobbies to pursue.
I know it can be tough to push through when you lack motivation, but try not to focus on the struggle. Instead, keep your eyes fixed ahead and think about what you’re looking forward to at the end of it all!
Instead of working through your lack of motivation, find something that inspires you and makes you excited for tomorrow!
Whether it’s making a new friend or learning how to paint – anything is possible if you put in just a little bit more effort than usual.
6. Talk to someone about how you’re feeling
Look, we’re all human. We each have our own personal issues that we’re dealing with in life, and sometimes this struggle makes it hard to stay motivated.
It’s totally normal to lose motivation sometimes, but the last thing I want you to do is to feel stuck.
Successful people are not successful because they are immune to feeling stuck.
They’re successful because they have people in their lives who love them unconditionally, and these loved ones help them get out of the rut when things go wrong.
If you don’t already have a strong support system built up, I encourage you to start looking for one today!
Talking about your problems with someone will almost always make you feel better — especially if that person is a good friend or family member.
Even just writing down how you’re feeling can be incredibly therapeutic.
So consider giving it a try before going into full-on self-pity mode. It may surprise you just how much more motivated you’ll feel after taking some time to process everything that’s been going on in your mind.
7. Give up any unhealthy habits
You may say to yourself, “I have no motivation” but that’s not exactly true. You may have plenty of motivation to continue engaging in unhealthy habits.
But guess what? These bad habits are hurting you more than they’re helping, so it’s time for you to give them up before things get any worse!
For example, drinking too many glasses of wine or eating an entire box of cookies can definitely take its toll on your body if you do it too often.
I know that giving up the booze and junk food might feel impossible right now – but trust me when I say that staying motivated is a lot easier once those nasty vices are gone from your system entirely!
You’ll notice a huge difference after just a couple of days without alcohol/sugar/etc. Your energy will skyrocket and there won’t be any room left in your mind for a lack of motivation.
8. Make a list of goals that are easy to do
A simple way to feel motivated when you’re in a slump is to make yourself an easy-to-follow list of goals.
Some examples include: “I will go for one walk every day this week” or “I will spend at least one hour outside every day this week.”
These kinds of steps are easier said than done, but they’ll be game-changers when it comes to regaining your motivation!
So take some time to think about two things right now: what do you want most from life and how can you achieve it?
Once these questions have been answered, start creating productive habits that lead toward the person you’ve always wanted to become!
You might not notice any difference after just a few days – but trust me when I say that you’ll feel more motivated than ever before after you’ve finished setting up these little routines.
And remember, even if it feels impossible to get out of bed today, it’s important to keep moving forward!
You might not feel like doing anything right now – but that doesn’t mean you should give up on your goals.
Writing down a list of actionable steps you can take to get motivated again is the perfect way to start feeling better about your life.
9. Don’t let your feelings of unhappiness or boredom last too long
Unhappiness and boredom are normal feelings to have but that doesn’t mean that you should let them last for weeks on end.
You deserve to be happy in life, so don’t settle for anything less than everything your heart desires!
The best way to avoid feeling bored or unhappy is by putting yourself out there and meeting new people. I know this can seem daunting at first, but it’s definitely worth the effort in the long run.
And you never know what new opportunities may come from just one new friendship.
Not to mention, you’ll be able to find more people who are willing to help motivate you when your motivation levels hit rock bottom.
Boredom is another common side effect of feeling unmotivated, which makes sense because how can anyone possibly feel motivated when they have nothing fun planned?
But here’s the thing boredom will always make its way into your life, so you might as well embrace it and do something worthwhile with the time that’s given to you.
So get up off the couch and go out into the world! You’ll be amazed by how much more motivated you feel once you’ve started doing things that make your heart smile.
10. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones
An example of a negative thought is, “I have no motivation to do anything.” But you cannot allow yourself to think this way.
Instead, replace it with something like, “Every day I will be motivated to get one step closer to my goals.”
This is not only a positive thought but also an actionable one. You can use your newfound motivation towards achieving that goal!
When you begin thinking more positively about your life and the situation you’re in right now, you’ll start feeling better than ever before – even if things don’t change overnight.
It takes time for our minds to catch up with new thoughts so just keep practicing this simple trick if necessary until you feel re-energized!
Also, hanging around positive people is another great way to make sure you’re motivated.
The people who surround us influence the way we think – so ensure that these people are encouraging and supportive of your goals!
Once you’ve surrounded yourself with positive, driven individuals; it’ll be much easier for you to feel motivated on a day-to-day basis.
11. Let go of things from your past
One way to help increase motivation and improve self-care is by letting go of things from your past.
As much as you might want to hold onto these memories, it’s not healthy to keep them inside all the time – especially when they’re holding you back in life!
I’m sure that there are plenty of people who would be happy if you shared some positive stories with them about how far you’ve come.
And I know that part of this process may feel like a step backward at first but trust me; it’ll only help motivate you for the future!
Letting go is hard but once everything has been said and done, there will always be something new waiting around the corner.
Something better than before even though it doesn’t seem possible right now. But one day soon enough, you’ll realize that letting go was the best thing for your future.
So if anything from your past is holding you back, it’s time to let it go and turn those negative thoughts into positive ones!
As long as you remain motivated about making a change; there will always be a way out of any situation. So keep moving forward with positivity and confidence and never look back at how far you’ve come.
12. Get out of bed every morning, even if you don’t want to
The alarm on your phone goes off bright and early, but you struggle to get out of bed because you have absolutely zero motivation to do anything. This lack of motivation to do anything is what holds us back from achieving our goals.
So get out of bed every morning, even if you don’t want to!
Doing this will help break the cycle of negative thoughts in your life because it’s difficult for anyone to feel motivated when they’re stuck in a rut all day long.
Once you’ve gotten up and begun tackling each task with enthusiasm; that lack of motivation might begin fading away into oblivion.
With these new feelings taking over – there’s nothing holding you down anymore so go ahead and take on anything else that comes your way!
Not only is getting out of bed incredibly beneficial but also making sure you eat breakfast before heading off to work or school can be just as important too.
When we skip meals, our bodies don’t have the energy it needs to start off on the right foot.
But if you’re hungry and feed your body, you’ll feel much more confident and prepared for your day ahead. It’s a simple act but, trust me, it makes all the difference!
13. Stay busy by finding a new hobby or learning a new skill
If you want to increase motivation and self-confidence at the same time, then it’s time to get busy; by finding a new hobby or learning something that you’ve always wanted to do.
This way, your mind will stay active and engaged in these tasks which are going to help release positive endorphins into the bloodstream.
Endorphins are hormones in our bodies that make us feel happy. So when they’re released naturally – it helps motivate us even more!
In addition, when we have hobbies or skills that interest us outside of work or school then everything else seems so much easier too.
We start seeing life from a different perspective because once we become experienced with what interests us most – there isn’t anything stopping us anymore! In this case, motivation is an inevitable part of everyday living.
So stop searching for it and start living in the moment because that’s where motivation begins.
14. Do some deep breathing exercises
Another simple act that you can take in regards to self-care is to do some deep breathing exercises.
This can be done anywhere at any time and all you have to do is breathe in deeply through your nose then exhale slowly from your mouth while counting to five.
Each number has a particular meaning so if you repeat the following mantra with every step: “Inhaling, I feel calm” or “Exhaling, I am strong.”
You’ll begin feeling more relaxed which will help motivate yourself for anything that comes next!
And whenever you’re feeling stressed out or anxious about something; simply take thirty seconds out of whatever it is that’s bothering you and try these simple yet effective techniques instead.
It may not seem like much, but things like this are essential in helping you to stay motivated and maintain focus.
Most people are too caught up in the different aspects of everyday life to take some time out for themselves.
So make sure you do, even if it’s just for thirty seconds or one minute; it’s better than nothing!
15. Count your blessings
In order to become a motivated person, you need to stop focusing on what you don’t have and start feeling grateful for the things that are already in your life.
Every single day, write down three new blessings; they can be anything at all!
Examples of this could include: “I’m thankful I got eight hours sleep last night” or “I’m thankful for the delicious homemade meal I ate today.”
The possibilities are endless when it comes to thinking about what you’re truly happy with because there’s always something – even if it may seem small.
However, once we learn how important these little moments really are then motivation becomes easier than ever before.
So take a few minutes out of each morning and just before bedtime and list down five simple blessings that happened that day.
It’s a great way to relax and reset your mind – especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed by life!
16. Motivate yourself by finding out what motivates other people
If you want to feel inspired, then it’s a great idea to find out what inspires others.
Whether you’re talking about friends or people that are more successful than yourself; their attitude is going to rub off on you at some point too!
So start paying attention to the different things they do and say because this will help motivate your own mindset in areas where you feel insecure.
For instance, if you know a friend who is always on time to different events and they’re successful in their career too; ask them how they do it!
Successful people love sharing what makes them motivated because doing so feels great!
17. Think about the good things that happen in your life, not the bad
Another simple way to become a motivated person is to stop thinking about the bad things that happen.
Chances are they’re a lot more common than you may realize because we all have different struggles to face on a daily basis!
So when something happens in your life, take some time out and think about what good came from it instead.
You might even discover how certain situations can lead to other opportunities such as: “I lost my job but now I have time to focus on this other project I’ve always wanted to work on.”
Or, “I couldn’t afford a vacation but I got to spend some quality time with my family instead.”
This is just another simple way of looking at everyday issues without taking them so seriously and learning to feel motivated by them too. So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed by life, take some time out and think about the good things instead.
18. Remind yourself of your capabilities
We are all capable of greatness and have the ability to impact other people’s lives for the better. One of the keys to feeling motivated is to remind yourself of what you’re truly capable of.
So start thinking about all the different skills and abilities that make up your personal character:
“I’m a great listener, I know how to give amazing advice and help people through difficult times.”
Or, “I can easily connect with local businesses for my client because I’ve built such strong relationships over time.”
No matter who we are or what our profession is; everyone has something they do better than anyone else. So take some time out and remind yourself exactly why you’re an amazing person and be confident in your self-worth.
Successful people are not only motivated to do everything they can for themselves, but also others too!
19. Stop comparing yourself to others
When it comes to motivation, it’s always a great idea to stop comparing yourself to others because it only makes you feel insecure.
You’re not the same person as anyone else – even if your career is similar or you were born in the same decade! So start looking at what sets you apart from everyone else instead of trying to make comparisons.
For instance, are they able to easily get up early? Then maybe this isn’t something that comes naturally for you yet so don’t worry about it too much either way.
The truth is there will be things that set us all apart and feeling motivated by yours can help propel your own personal progress forward every single day!
When we compare ourselves with other people, our self-esteem starts taking a hit and we start feeling insecure about everything that makes us unique instead.
So just remind yourself why you’re great and give yourself a break if you think someone else is better than you at something!
20. Challenge yourself
If you don’t have the motivation to do anything, then challenge yourself to do something you don’t feel like doing.
For instance, if the thought of writing an article for your blog feels overwhelming then just take some time out and write a few sentences instead!
Don’t think about how long it will be or what you need to include – start with only one sentence even if that’s all there is to it.
Before you know it, additional thoughts will come into mind because nothing comes easily at first.
So the next time you feel like you don’t have the motivation to do anything, just take some time out and challenge yourself to do something instead.
21. Accept the things you cannot change and focus on what you can control
A powerful step to begin feeling motivated is to accept the things you cannot change and focus on what you can control instead.
Maybe it’s a project at work that others aren’t supporting or maybe there are certain people in your life that seem to always bring down your mood.
Whatever it is, don’t let these types of situations make you feel stressed out because they’re only going to drain your energy.
Instead, try to focus on the things you can change and acknowledge your ability to make a difference in any given situation.
As long as you’re willing to move forward with positivity then anything is possible!
Focusing on the things you can control and moving forward with positivity is a great way to overcome any lack of motivation.
